The post-construction cleaning checklist every Arizona contractor needs

Post-construction cleanup isn't "sweep up and go." Drywall dust gets into every seam, adhesive residue clings to glass and fixtures, and Arizona's fine jobsite grit finds its way into vents and tracks. Done in the wrong order, you'll clean the same surface twice. Done right — in phases — you hand over a space that photographs like a showroom.

Phase 1 — Rough clean (during construction)

Once major installations are in but before finishes are complete:

• Remove large debris, packaging, and leftover materials.
• Knock down dust from walls, beams, and exposed surfaces.
• Rough sweep and shop-vac floors to keep dust from compounding.
• Clear stickers and labels from windows, doors, and fixtures before adhesive bakes on.

Phase 2 — Final clean (the detailed one)

This is the phase that makes or breaks the walkthrough. Work top to bottom so dust falls onto surfaces you haven't cleaned yet:

Ceilings, walls & fixtures

• Dust vents, diffusers, sprinkler heads, and light fixtures.
• Wipe walls, switch plates, and door frames; spot-clean paint scuffs.
• Clean and polish all light fixtures and ceiling fans.

Glass, frames & surfaces

• Detail-clean interior windows and glass, including tracks and frames.
• Remove adhesive, paint overspray, and grout haze from glass and tile.
• Wipe down all horizontal surfaces, cabinets (inside and out), and shelving.

Restrooms & kitchens

• Sanitize sinks, toilets, counters, and fixtures; polish stainless and chrome.
• Clean inside cabinets, drawers, and appliances.

Floors (do these last)

• Vacuum carpet edges and corners where dust settles.
• Sweep, then mop or auto-scrub hard floors; remove any curing residue.
• Address grout haze on tile and buff finished floors as specified.

Phase 3 — Touch-up (before handover)

• Walk the space with fresh eyes — dust resettles; catch what fell overnight.
• Re-detail glass and stainless (they show every fingerprint under new lighting).
• Final vacuum of traffic paths and spot-clean any last marks.

Don't forget the Arizona factors

• Fine dust everywhere: replace or clean HVAC filters after cleanup so the system doesn't just re-circulate jobsite dust.
• Exterior: entryways, sidewalks, and storefront glass collect construction grime — budget for a power wash of hardscape.
• Heat & adhesives: residue cures fast in the heat, so tackle labels and overspray early (Phase 1) rather than fighting them later.
